چکیده

When one is concerned with specifying the original reference [Bedeutung ] of the word ‘function’ in its mathematical usage, it is easy to fall into calling function of x an expression [Ausdruck ] formed from ‘x’ and particular numbers by means of the notations [Bezeichnungen] for sum, product, power, difference, and so on. This is inappropriate [unzutreffend ] because in this way a function is depicted [hingestellt ] as an expression—that is, as a concatenation of signs [Verbindung von Zeichen]—not as what is designated [Bezeichnete] thereby. Hence, instead of ‘expression’, one should say ‘reference of an expression’.

Time-Discontinuous Finite Element Analysis of Two-Dimensional Elastodynamic Problems using Complex Fourier Shape Functions

This paper reformulates a time-discontinuous finite element method (TD-FEM) based on a new class of shape functions, called complex Fourier hereafter, for solving two-dimensional elastodynamic problems. These shape functions, which are derived from their corresponding radial basis functions, have some advantages such as the satisfaction of exponential and trigonometric function fields in comple...

Integrals of Lagrange functions and sum rules

Exact values are derived for some matrix elements of Lagrange functions, i.e. orthonormal cardinal functions, constructed from orthogonal polynomials. They are obtained with exact Gauss quadratures supplemented by corrections. In the particular case of Lagrange-Laguerre and shifted Lagrange-Jacobi functions, sum rules provide exact values for matrix elements of 1/x and 1/x as well as for the ki...

Pragmatic expressions in cross-linguistic perspective

This  paper  focuses  on  some  pragmatic  expressions  that  are  characteristic  of  informal  spoken English, their possible equivalents in some other languages, and their use by EFL learners from different  backgrounds.  These  expressions,  called  general  extenders  (e.g.  and  stuff,  or something), are shown to be different from discourse markers and to exhibit variation in form, funct...

COMPOSITE INTERPOLATION METHOD AND THE CORRESPONDING DIFFERENTIATION MATRIX

Properties of the hybrid of block-pulse functions and Lagrange polynomials based on the Legendre-Gauss-type points are investigated and utilized to define the composite interpolation operator as an extension of the well-known Legendre interpolation operator. The uniqueness and interpolating properties are discussed and the corresponding differentiation matrix is also introduced. The appl...

A Study of Frege’s Influence on A. J. Ayer’s Theory of Emotivism

No doubt, Gottlob Frege and A. J. Ayer are considered to be among the most prominent contemporary philosophers. Insofar as one of them has revolutionized the linguistic domain while the other has influenced the domain of ethics in a diametrical fashion. Ayer’s theory of emotivism is regarded as one of the most controversial moral theories in the past century. We believe that Frege, as a linguis...
